Sukhothai floods affect 2,767 households; risk of worsening crisis due to heavy rains

SUKHOTHAI, Thailand – The flood situation in Sukhothai remains severe as water levels in the Yom River continue to rise. The province is facing a potential crisis as more water flows in from Phayao and Phrae. The Department of Meteorology forecasts heavy rain from August 26-28, which could lead to flash floods and further river overflows.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation in Sukhothai reports that 4 districts, 21 sub-districts, 69 villages, and 3 communities have been impacted. A total of 2,767 households have been affected, with 1,916 rai of agricultural land damaged. Roads, schools, and other public infrastructure are also impacted.



In Muang Sukhothai District, floodwaters have breached embankments, submerging homes and farmlands in 6 sub-districts, affecting 518 households and 100 rai of farmland.

In Si Samrong District, the embankment beneath Siripanyarat Bridge has collapsed, resulting in floods affecting 4 sub-districts and 374 households.

Si Satchanalai District has experienced flooding across 4 sub-districts, affecting 212 households and causing damage to farmland, roads, and a school.

Sawankhalok District has seen the erosion of the Yom-Nan canal embankment, resulting in floodwaters affecting 7 sub-districts, 1,663 households, and 1,800 rai of farmland.

Authorities, volunteers, monks, and rescue teams are working tirelessly to assist those affected and are monitoring the situation 24/7, particularly in vulnerable areas.
