SURIN, 13 May 2014 – Surin Authorities want to persuade people to stop smoking and not harm others with cigarette smoke, on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day.
A Surin Provincial Spokesperson says according to the Nakhon Ratchasima Department of Disease Control, it is now established that secondhand smoke causes as great a risk of cancer to the non smoker nearby, as to the smokers themselves.
On the occasion of ‘World No Tobacco Day 2014’ on 31 May every year, Surin Province has previously persuaded some smokers to stop or reduce smoking; moreover, WHO has announced this year’s theme is ‘Raise Taxes on Tobacco’.
It is well known that secondhand smoke is damaging to both smokers and passive smokers, especially those suffering from bronchitis or pneumonia.
Children who are surrounded by secondhand smoke even in the short-term are likely to suffer from bronchitis and pneumonia; while a pregnant woman and the unborn baby will possibly suffer from toxemia of pregnancy, abortion, premature birth, or the tragic sudden unexpected death syndrome of the newly born child.
Adults who can’t avoid secondhand smoke have a higher risk of suffering from cancer and heart disease than other non-smoking persons.
