NARATHIWAT, March 24 — Some teachers in the troubled southern province of Narathiwat have expressed worry over worsening violence and intimidation in the region, according to the local teachers’ association.
Sanguan Intarak, chairman of the Narathiwat Teachers’ Federation, said that the attacks against teachers working in the southern border provinces recently have caused increasing uneasiness among educators here.
The latest attack was the killing of Somsri Thanyalak, a teacher of the Ban Khok Mue Ba Mitraphap School in Narathiwat’s Tak Bai district last Thursday, he said.
After the incident, one teacher of the school asked to be transferred.
Mr Sanguan said that the teacher protection measures should be adjusted to increase confidence among the teachers.
The map of each teacher’s home may be prepared for the security personnel for security measures as security was not provided between Ms Somsri’s home and the main road.
The attack occurred 300 metres from her home.
Mr Sanguan said that the Federation would also urge school administrators to conclude the work for the teachers quicker to let the teachers to stay at homes or bring work to do at home for their safety.
