BANGKOK, June 2015 – The quality and taste of tap water in the metropolitan area still meet the standards despite a water shortage in Chao Phraya River, confirmed Director of the Corporate Communication Department of the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority (MWA) Jutharat Somjitranukit on Friday.
The Director explained that technically the water will turn salty only when Electrical Conductivity (EC) in water supply reaches 1,200 units. However, current EC in the water is approximately at 160-550 units. The public therefore should not be worried.
The MWA will inform changes in the EC to the public periodically. For those who are still concerned over the water quality can check the EC figure online by themselves by visiting http://twqonline.mwa.co.th.
About the MWA’s suggestion for each household to reserve 60 liters of water supply, Mrs. Jutharat said that it was only a preparatory measure in case the EC value keeps going beyond 700 units and climbing up to 1,200, the level which can turn the water salty. The situation mostly occurs during spring tidal period on a Buddhist Holy Day. Above all, she stressed that people should use water wisely.
