Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports together with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China held a ceremony to light up this year’s traditional Chinese New Year decorations in Bangkok’s Chinatown district on Yaowarat Road.
H.E. Mr. Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, Minister of Tourism and Sports, presided over the ceremony on Saturday, 29 January, 2022, at the Royal Jubilee Gate (Odeon Circle). The event was also attended by H.E. Mr. Han Zhiqiang, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Thailand, and Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, Governor of TAT.
The Ministry of Tourism and Sports, TAT, and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China have worked closely together every year to organize the Chinese New Year celebrations. This year’s activities are being held in Yaowarat (Bangkok’s bustling Chinatown district) and the nearby province of Ratchaburi.
H.E. Mr. Phiphat said, “While celebrating the Chinese New Year 2022, these events are also celebrating and helping to reinforce the close diplomatic relations enjoyed between Thailand and China which are now in their 47th year.”
In Yaowarat, the Chinese New Year 2022 decorations and lights to celebrate the Year of the Tiger are on display from 29 January to 28 February, 2022, from 18.00 Hrs-24.00 Hrs. each day, at the Royal Jubilee Gate (Odeon Circle) and along Yaowarat Road. The festive displays include a 45-metre-long light tunnel arch and more than 800 street lanterns. On this occasion, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn graciously bestowed four lamps for the decoration of the arch at the Royal Jubilee Gate.
In Ratchaburi, the Chinese New Year 2022 Festival is taking place between 29 January and 2 February, 2022, at the Pracha Phatthana Dam in Mueang District. As well as decorations and lights, the event’s programme includes cultural performances and live music on a stage set in the middle of the Maeklong River, lion and dragon dance performances, a water fountain show, cooking demonstrations of auspicious food, and workshops on Chinese arts; such as, writing, Chinese lantern making, and Chinese astrology.
TAT is also supporting the Chinese New Year Festival in Nakhon Sawan province, which is being held from 25 January to 5 February, 2022, at Pak Nam Pho in Mueang District.
Mr. Yuthasak, said TAT organised and supported the Chinese New Year 2022 festivities under the COVID Free-Setting model strictly following public health measures.
Participants wanting to attend the events can pre-register via the QueQ application, and must show proof of having received two vaccination doses and a negative test result for COVID-19 via the Antigen Test (ATK) method within 72 hours at the event entry. Alternatively, the ATK test can be done upon entry free of charge. All participants must undergo temperature screening, and abide by preventive measures and wear a face mask at all times.
