BANGKOK, Thailand – The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has announced that temperatures in the northern and northeastern regions will drop by 1-3°C, while central Thailand, including Bangkok and nearby provinces, as well as the eastern region, will see a decrease of 1-2°C. Heavy rainfall is expected in parts of southern Thailand, particularly in the lower region.

According to TMD Announcement No. 9 on cold weather and strong winds in Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand (effective until January 13), a strong high-pressure system from China has extended to cover Thailand and the South China Sea during January 12-13. This will bring lower temperatures and strong winds.

In the North and Northeast, temperatures will decrease by 1-3°C, while the central, eastern, and Bangkok Metropolitan areas will experience a drop of 1-2°C. Residents are advised to take precautions for their health due to the colder weather and to be mindful of potential fire hazards caused by dry and windy conditions.

The strong northeastern monsoon over the Gulf of Thailand and southern regions will result in heavy rainfall in some areas of the lower South. The Gulf of Thailand will experience strong winds, with waves reaching 2-4 meters in height, and over 4 meters in areas with thunderstorms. The Andaman Sea will see waves of 1-2 meters, with offshore waves reaching 2-3 meters and over 3 meters in stormy areas.

People in southern coastal areas should remain cautious of high waves hitting the shores. Mariners are advised to navigate with care and avoid sailing in areas with thunderstorms, while those in the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea are recommended to refrain from leaving port until January 13.

The public is urged to follow updates from the Thai Meteorological Department via their website at www.tmd.go.th, or contact them at 0-2399-4012-13 or 1182 for 24-hour information. (TNA)
