‘Teochew Opera Festival of Siam’ in Bangkok June 12-16

A press conference was held to announce the festival, featuring a special Teochew opera performance by the premier Teochew opera troupe from Chenghai, Guangdong Province, China.

The Ministry of Culture invites you to enjoy the “Teochew Opera Festival of Siam,” a free event taking place from June 12 to June 16, 2024, at the Teng Hai Association of Thailand in Bang Rak, Bangkok.

A press conference was held to announce the festival, featuring a special Teochew opera performance by the premier Teochew opera troupe from Chenghai, Guangdong Province, China.

Dr. Yupa Taweewattanakitborvon, Permanent Secretary for Culture, and Mr. Charin Tangyuphuwadol, President of the Teng Hai Association of Thailand, were in attendance.



Dr. Yupa highlighted that the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, the Teochew Association of Thailand, and the Teng Hai Association of Thailand have collaborated to bring this extraordinary performance to Thailand. It showcases the beauty and cultural significance of Teochew opera, an important art form that fosters cultural ties between Thailand and China.

The Ministry of Culture recognizes the importance of preserving and promoting this art form, which serves not only as entertainment but also as a cultural ambassador strengthening the relationship between the two nations.


The public is cordially invited to attend these special Teochew opera performances from June 12 to June 16, 2024, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Teochew Association of Thailand.

Dr. Sangchai Sothivorakul, President of the Chinese Opera Association, emphasized that this festival will feature dazzling performances with a mix of spectacular lighting and stage effects, brought to life by top artists from the Chenghai troupe.

Each day will present a unique performance, marking the troupe’s debut in Thailand. The narratives will extend beyond traditional war stories to include themes of gratitude, education, and cultural heritage, providing valuable insights for younger generations unfamiliar with Teochew opera.




This cultural initiative aligns with Bangkok’s development plan as a hub of economy and learning, aiming to enhance Thai-Chinese relations and preserve the legacy of Teochew opera in Thailand. It symbolizes the unity and remarkable progress of the Teochew community in Thailand.
