Thai ambassador confirms no Thai casualties in Japanese quake

BANGKOK, 12 March 2011 (NNT) – Thai Ambassador to Tokyo Veerasak Futrakul has reported that all Thai nationals in Japan are thus far in safe conditions following yesterday’s massive earthquake.

Citing contacts between the Royal Thai Embassy in Tokyo and the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as local state agencies in quake-hit areas, Mr Veerasak affirmed that there had been no reports of injuries or deaths among Thai citizens in Japan. He said the embassy had already prepared a team of officials who would travel to devastated zones, particularly Miyagi and Fukushima Prefectures, for inspection and assistance as soon as the areas become accessible.

In terms of damages on the embassy building caused by the shaking, the Thai ambassador said they were minimal. He assured that Japan is now safe for travelers despite some inconveniences.

According to Mr Veerasak, the Thai embassy in Tokyo has been contacted by a number of people in Thailand to help search for their relatives in Japan, numbering 180 individuals; 10 of whom have been found and are unharmed. The embassy has established a coordination center which can be reached around the clock at telephone number 03-3222-4101 extension 200 and 275.
