The Thai Embassy in the US warns Thais living abroad against fake calls pretending to be embassy officials, soliciting personal information.
Thai Ambassador to Washington DC, Thanee Sangrat, has issued a warning to Thai nationals abroad to verify calls claiming to be from embassy officials following on reports of a fake consulate syndicate pretending to be high-ranking officials.
The ambassador urged Thais to use direct hotlines to confirm the authenticity of calls from embassies and consulates.
He stressed the importance of protecting Thai nationals overseas, suspecting that some in the US may have fallen victim to fake consulate syndicates more than reported.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Parnpree Bahiddha-nukara has engaged in talks with Thai officials on the matter, with further discussions with the US scheduled for the following day (February 12) on collaboration in combating technology-related crimes.
This comes amid growing Thai-U.S. relations, with plans for high-level talks and visits between the two countries, including a planned visit from US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo to Thailand.
Moreover, a dialogue between the two nations at ministerial levels, scheduled in late February is expected to cover various issues including cyber-security. (TNA)
