BANGKOK, Thailand – Minister of Foreign Affairs Maris Sangiampongsa has traveled to Myanmar for high-level talks on security, crime prevention, and economic development. The visit, made at the invitation of Myanmar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister U Than Swe, included meetings with top officials, including Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.

Discussions covered transnational crime, with both sides agreeing to strengthen intelligence-sharing and enforcement efforts to combat narcotics trafficking, online fraud, and human trafficking. Thai authorities have been working to dismantle call center scams targeting Thai nationals, while joint operations are planned to crack down on cross-border criminal networks.



The two countries also addressed environmental concerns, focusing on transboundary haze pollution, which has impacted air quality in northern Thailand and Myanmar. Water resource management for the Sai and Ruak rivers was discussed, with both sides seeking to improve flood prevention and ensure sustainable water use.

Border security and economic cooperation were key topics, with discussions on stabilizing conflict-prone areas and expanding cross-border trade and investment. Infrastructure projects benefiting both nations were highlighted as part of efforts to strengthen economic ties and regional development.

Maris reaffirmed Thailand’s support for Myanmar’s socio-economic growth through education and vocational training programs, citing long-standing diplomatic relations and cooperation on shared regional challenges between the two sides. (NNT)
