SURAT THANI, 19 September 2011 – The agriculture ministers of Thailand and Indonesia have convened on Ko Samui of Surat Thani province for discussions over the issue of food security during which three related strategies were drawn.
Thai Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Theera Wongsamut has met with his Indonesian counterpart at the Bhundhari Spa Resort and Villa on Ko Samui, Surat Thani, for the 2nd Expert Group Meeting on Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security, which was hosted by Thailand. The main objective of the meeting was to ensure stability of food supplies in both countries.
On this occasion, the ministers agreed to jointly push forward three relevant strategies, which consist of the enhancement of both quantity and quality of produce by importing better seeds and fertilizers, the management of the usage and conservation of natural resources in an efficient way and the application of information technology to the disaster warning and weather forecasting system in a bid to help save agriculturalists from potential damages.
The meeting was also an opportunity for over 80 senior government officials and experts in agriculture and agricultural technology from both Thailand and Indonesia to exchange their opinions and experiences related to the maintenance of food security. The results of this meeting will be compiled and presented to the 5th Thai-Indonesian Joint Agricultural Working Group Meeting to be hosted by Thailand next year.
