BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, April 25 – Thai and Myanmar leaders today exchanged updates on the Dawei deep seaport project, joint industrial development along their border and the unresolved problem of Rohingya ethnic people, it was reported.
Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and Myanmar President Thein Sein held bilateral talks on the sidelines of the two-day 22nd ASEAN Summit in the Brunei capital which ends today.
The two leaders discussed progress of the Dawei mega project on the Thai-Myanmar border after Thailand proposed the SPV Sharehold Agreement – a joint venture between the two countries.
The Thai premier also proposed that Japan join the project as a strategic partner for development of various schemes related to the seaport.
Ms Yingluck hailed the Myanmar initiative to open three new border checkpoints opposite Thailand’s Three Pagoda Pass, Ban Phu Nam Ron in Kanchanaburi and Sing Khon checkpoint in Prachuap Khiri Khan.
The Thai premier later met with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and a representative of the Malaysian prime minister for the 7th Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) meeting.
They discussed development of various plans for connectivity among the three countries including electricity connection between Malaysia’s Malacca and Indonesia’s Peganbaru, expansions of customs checkpoints, plant and an animal quarantine centre on the Thai-Malaysian border and joint development of halal food for export to Muslim markets in other countries.
