BANGKOK, Thailand – Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra convened an urgent meeting with the Ministers of Commerce and Agriculture on Thursday to address the decline in rice and other agricultural product prices, officials said.
The Prime Minister instructed the National Rice Policy Committee (NRPC) to swiftly implement short-term measures to stabilize rice prices and accelerate the development of high-quality rice varieties.
Discussions focused on addressing the issue of farmers planting uncertified rice varieties, which has led to lower quality and prices, impacting the overall rice market. The Ministry of Agriculture was tasked with expediting the development and distribution of high-quality rice varieties to farmers.
Short-term measures aimed at supporting rice prices are expected to be presented to the Cabinet for approval following an NRPC meeting.
“Farmers can be assured that the government is prioritizing this issue and will take swift action”, she said. (TNA)
