BANGKOK, 28 November 2014 – Thai researchers at the Synchrotron Light Research Institute (Public Organization) are successful in changing the natural color of the freshwater pearl into the gold color for the first time in the world.

The pearl color is changed from the original one into gold by using a special technology of X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy which can analyze the variety of atom structures affecting the pearl color, said Niwat Thammachak.

Operators in the gems industry have been trying to sort out the possible ways in gems enhancement such as heat treatment and irradiation for the fully-diffused color and the splendor of the gems.

Niwat added that the X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy is an important technique which enhances the gem knowledge since it can analyze the change of atom structure useful for various processes of gem treatment. The innovation made by the institute this time is expected to be recognized in the international market, Niwat said.
