BANGKOK, 3 April 2012 – Thailand has sent out its congratulations to Myanmar for her successful by-election, which took place on 1 April.
The Thai Foreign Ministry has issued a statement congratulating Myanmar for the success of its by-election, expressing its admiration for the sincerity and seriousness with which the government of Myanmar has relied on in order to carry out the voting process. Thailand has also praised its neighbour for having invited observers from around the globe to monitor the by-election, which confirmed a commitment, earlier expressed by its government, to hold a free and fair election. This historic event is significant to Myanmar’s path to reconciliation and the cultivation of democracy among its people.
Thailand has also reaffirmed its full cooperation to help Myanmar reach its goal and future success. Additionally, the statement has confirmed Thailand’s stance to support Myanmar in its democratic reform while also asking the global community to encourage the changes taking place in Myanmar by temporarily lifting the sanctions imposed on Burma for a number of years, in order to benefit the country’s population.
