The Royal Thai Consulate-General, New York, in collaboration with the Thai Cultural Center of New York, organized the “Thailand Day” event to present cultural activities aimed at fostering a sense of attachment and love for Thailand among Thai children and youth born and raised in the United States. This initiative seeks to strengthen the Thai community and promote positive relationships between Thailand and the United States in the long term. The event attracted more than 500 attendees, including Thai nationals and people from diverse backgrounds.
Coinciding with UNESCO’s recognition of “Songkran in Thailand, Thai New Year Festival” as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity, Thailand Day celebrated this occasion by organizing activities such as the pouring of water over Buddha statues and elders’ hands, traditional dances, Thai music performances, demonstrations of Muay Thai, traditional Thai puppet shows, and displays of Thai arts from the four regions. These activities were supported by the Thai Cultural Center of New York, Vajiradhammapadip Temple Inc. in New York, Wat Nawamintararachutis Meditation Center, Boston, and the Chiang Mai Youth Cultural Ambassadors, which contributed to creating a vibrant atmosphere at the event.
During the event, Consul General Somjai Taphaopong awarded prizes to winners of essay writing and drawing competitions on the themes of “My Thailand” and “My Thai Tradition,” totaling 12 awards. Additionally, there was a quiz competition about Thailand and a storytelling session reflecting participants’ thoughts and feelings about Thailand. Moreover, there was an art corner where children could showcase their talents and take their artworks home as souvenirs.
Participants also enjoyed Thai cuisine sponsored by Thai community associations, witnessed demonstrations of making traditional Thai desserts such as Kanom Krok, Kanom Sampanni, and Som Tum. The event was a delightful experience, leaving attendees satisfied both culturally and gastronomically.
The Royal Thai Consulate-General, New York extends gratitude to the Thai Cultural Center of New York, Team Thailand Agencies in New York City, Thai community associations, various businesses, and Thai community members in New York and neighboring states for their collaborative efforts in creating an environment where our children can learn about Thai heritage in a warm and welcoming atmosphere reminiscent of Thailand. Special thanks are also extended to parents and teachers for their enthusiastic participation in various activities. (PRD)
