Thailand discusses helping Myanmar cope with flood situation in northern regions

BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maris Sangiampongsa, disclosed that he discussed the flood situation that is affecting Thailand, Myanmar, Lao PDR, and Vietnam with relevant embassies and agencies last week. The aim of the discussion was to seek collaboration with Myanmar to cope with the flood situation in northern Thailand and Myanmar.



He confirmed that the Royal Thai Embassy is urgently coordinating so that the agencies involved with water management in both countries can discuss the technical details on expanding catchment areas to enable flood water to be released more quickly.

Mr. Maris said further that the flood situation is a crisis for various countries along the Mekong River. To find a long-term solution, he is preparing to propose cooperation in water management through the Mekong-Lanchang Cooperation (MLC). (PRD)
