BANGKOK, Thailand – The government has raised its earthquake emergency response to Level 3, the highest level under the national disaster management system, following a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake in central Myanmar that caused widespread tremors across several Thai regions. The National Command Center for Disaster Prevention and Mitigation made the announcement on March 28, triggering a full-scale national response.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul has been appointed Incident Commander, responsible for overseeing nationwide relief and coordination efforts under the National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Plan (2021–2027). The government’s goal is to accelerate assistance and ensure public safety across all affected areas.

The quake, which struck Sagaing Region in Myanmar at 1:20 p.m. local time at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, was felt in Bangkok and the surrounding metropolitan area, as well as in the north, northeast, central, and southern provinces. Authorities have reported structural damage and ongoing safety concerns, prompting emergency inspections and evacuation support.

With the Level 3 emergency status in effect, the Interior Ministry now leads a centralized command structure, facilitating real-time assessments, coordinated resource deployment, and streamlined communication between national and provincial agencies. Provincial governors and local officials have been instructed to report regularly and follow official protocols.

Rescue operations are continuing, with additional support being mobilized as the situation develops. The government has urged all agencies to maintain high readiness levels and will issue further updates as more information becomes available.
