Thailand, through the Ministry of Commerce, is positioning itself as a leader in the future food industry by prioritizing innovative, safe, traceable, and eco-friendly products. The plan, collaboration between the government and the private sector, aims to transform agricultural products into a new engine for economic growth by meeting the growing global demand for healthier and more sustainable food options.
The future food sector in Thailand is categorized into four main areas: functional, medical, organic, and alternative protein. In 2023, exports in this sector reached 143 billion baht, with functional foods and ingredients making up 89.7% of all future food exports. Key markets for these products include the United States, Vietnam, China, Myanmar, and Cambodia.
In the first four months of this year alone, exports in this sector totaled 51.6 billion baht, with functional foods again leading the way, accounting for 90.8%. The Thai Product Standards Organization (TPSO) and the Thai Food Association (TFA) are developing a ‘future food dashboard’ on the Trade Intelligence System website to support this expanding sector. This tool will offer comprehensive trade data to entrepreneurs and the public, aiding in decision-making and strategy development.
The government’s commitment to advancing the future food industry is evident in its focus on wellbeing, sustainability, and innovation. These priorities tap into emerging trends and drive significant growth in Thailand’s economy, positioning the country as a leading player in the global food market. (NNT)
