CHIANG RAI, Thailand – The Thailand Environment Institute (TEI), in partnership with local and regional authorities, has launched a cross-border firebreak project to reduce agricultural burning in three border towns. The Kick-Off event, held in Wiang Kaen district, Chiang Rai province, sets off a key step in strengthening cooperation between Thailand and Laos under a broader haze pollution management framework that also involves Myanmar.
Chiang Rai Governor Charin Thongsuk highlighted the province’s vulnerability to forest fires and haze pollution due to its proximity to Laos and Myanmar. Ongoing collaboration with Bokeo province in Laos has already contributed to wildfire control, and the new firebreak project is expected to build on these efforts. Bokeo Governor Thongchanh Manixay acknowledged Thailand’s advanced haze monitoring systems and the benefits of technical cooperation in addressing transboundary environmental challenges.
Xayaboury Governor Phongsavanh Sitthavong stressed the importance of sustained public awareness campaigns and alternative farming methods to reduce open burning. He called for more substantial joint initiatives to educate border communities on the long-term health and environmental effects of agricultural fires. Wiang Kaen District Chief Suphot Langkawiranan outlined local efforts already underway, including afforestation projects, joint firebreak construction, and training programs promoting sustainable farming techniques.
TEI Director Dr. Wijarn Simachaya emphasized the need for continued collaboration with neighboring countries to tackle transboundary haze pollution. TEI has worked with government agencies and communities to implement best practices, with models like the “Mae Chaem Model” in Chiang Mai providing practical alternatives to burning. Lao authorities have begun adopting similar approaches to achieve long-term air quality improvements.
By combining community-led initiatives, technical expertise, and cross-border policy coordination, Thailand and Laos are taking concrete steps to mitigate haze pollution. The firebreak project strengthens regional cooperation and supports ongoing efforts to improve air quality for border communities. (NNT)
