The Thai government has advised the public to refrain from excessive drinking and to avoid driving while intoxicated during the New Year holidays.

According to Deputy Government Spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek, the government has implemented measures to ensure traffic control and minimize the number of accidents caused by drunk driving that can cause injury or death. The Royal Thai Police issued a public reminder that those with a blood alcohol content (BAC) level of more than 50 milligram percent (mg%). Those under the age of 20 with a BAC of 20 mg% are deemed drunk drivers by law, as is anyone who refuses to undergo the blood alcohol test.

The government recently announced that it has increased penalties for repeat offenders of drunk driving. According to the 13th Amendment to the Land Traffic Act, first-time offenders may be imprisoned for up to a year or fined 5,000-20,000 baht. Repeat offenders who offend within two years of their previous offense may be imprisoned for up to two years and fined 50,000-100,000 baht. Those whose drunk driving causes injury or death can be imprisoned for up to 10 years and fined 200,000 baht, with their driver’s license also potentially being suspended or revoked.

The government wished everyone a safe and happy New Year and advised all to follow the law and prioritize safety on the roads during the holiday season.
