BANGKOK, 13 September 2013 Thailand has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Japan on flood warning system, while an approval for a 38-million-baht budget will be sought from the cabinet.
Speaking after the MoU signing ceremony with his counterpart Japan’s Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Minister Akihiro Ota, Deputy Prime Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi said the MoU was meant to help Thailand improve its flood warning system. He said Japan expressed its concerns over possible flooding in the future as there are many Japanese companies in Thailand. Mr. Ota has, therefore, urged for more cooperation from both sides to effectively prevent businesses from being damaged by future floods.
Regarding the government’s water management project, Mr. Plodprasop said a stage will be opened in 39 flood-prone provinces across Thailand for people to share their thoughts and ideas on the project, adding that the first 2 stages will be held in Lamphun and Lopburi on October 7th.
In addition, he will seek a cabinet approval for a 38-million-baht budget in order to conduct royal rainmaking operations in the North and Northeast, as Thailand has seen 5-6 percent less rain this year than it did last year, Plodprasop said.
