BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand has made significant strides in strengthening its cybersecurity, securing 7th place in the 2024 Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI), a remarkable jump from 44th place in 2020.
The GCI, organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), evaluated 194 countries based on various cybersecurity metrics, highlighting Thailand’s progress with an impressive score of 99.22 out of 100.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Economy and Society, Prasert Jantararuangtong, announced that the achievement reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing digital security under the leadership of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
The GCI evaluates countries across five critical areas. These are legal, technical, organizational, capacity development, and cooperation. Thailand earned full marks in four categories, with slightly lower scores in organizational efforts, and was classified as a Tier 1 Role Model country in cybersecurity.
Minister Prasert also emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to improve digital security through the “Growth Engine of Thailand” initiative, which focuses on boosting digital competitiveness, ensuring digital safety, and enhancing the digital skills of the workforce. Additionally, the government has established the National Cybersecurity Excellence Center to spearhead research, development, and international cooperation in combating cyber threats.
These initiatives aim to position Thailand as a global leader in cybersecurity and support the long-term development of the country’s digital infrastructure. (NNT)
