BANGKOK, Thailand – The government is optimistic about securing both MotoGP and Formula One (F1) events, with discussions underway to extend MotoGP’s contract and explore the feasibility of bringing F1 to the country.

Sorawong Thienthong, Minister of Tourism and Sports, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding motorsport and sports tourism, emphasizing that careful planning is essential to maximize Thailand’s benefits.

Talks with MotoGP rights holders are progressing to ensure the continuation of Thailand’s hosting rights, while recent discussions between F1 executives and Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra followed up on earlier negotiations initiated during the administration of former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin.

F1 officials have advised Thailand to take a methodical approach rather than rush the process, ensuring that the country secures the best possible terms.

Regarding venue selection, the minister indicated that multiple proposals are under consideration and that no major obstacles exist. Additionally, he emphasized the economic benefits of hosting such global sporting events, noting that while initial government investment may be substantial, long-term success would depend on private sector participation.

The government is actively engaging with businesses to increase their involvement in funding and organizing these events, ensuring a sustainable model for Thailand’s motorsport industry.
