Thailand is set to celebrate two major royal anniversaries with a special Khon performance titled “Phra Chakrawatara.” The event, organized by the SUPPORT Foundation, marks the 92nd birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother, and the 72nd birthday of His Majesty the King. The performance will run from November 7 to December 8 at the Thailand Cultural Center.
“Phra Chakrawatara,” derived from Thailand’s national epic, the Ramakien, tells the story of Ravana’s deceit involving Maricha’s transformation into a golden deer, leading to Sita’s abduction. The episode sets the stage for the epic battle between Rama’s and Ravana’s forces, depicted through traditional Khon dance. The performance features a new generation of dancers trained to execute complex choreography with precision, complemented by live traditional Thai music.
The production promises an array of elaborate costumes and dynamic stage scenes, including Narayana on Ananta Shesha, Ravana’s celestial chariot, and the epic’s great battles. These elements create a visually captivating experience that honors Thailand’s rich cultural heritage.
