The Cabinet has approved a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Thailand’s Ministry of Labour and South Korea’s Ministry of Employment and Labor, relating to the Employment Permit System (EPS) for sending Thai workers to South Korea.
Karom Phonphonklang, Deputy Government Spokesperson, made the announcement, stating that non-substantial amendments that do not conflict with national interests are permitted in the new MOU if necessary.
Karom explained that Thailand and South Korea have previously signed six MOUs under the EPS, facilitating the efficient employment of Thai workers in South Korea. The latest MOU expired on September 5th of 2021, but remains effective pending renewal unless terminated by either party.
Since the first MOU in 2004, nearly 95,000 Thai workers have been employed in South Korea, primarily in industries such as manufacturing, agriculture, construction, and fisheries.
The new MOU, the seventh of its kind, continues similar terms but includes provisions for additional support from Thailand for workers in unforeseen circumstances, such as pandemics. This ensures continuous operation under the EPS and prevents illegal stays in South Korea.
Karom also mentioned ongoing negotiations for this MOU, with South Korea requesting specific amendments, which have been acknowledged by both parties. The MOU is expected to be inked soon. (NNT)
