Suchinda Cherdchai, owner of 65-year-old Cherdchai Tour, put it up for sale because it continuously posted losses due to COVID-19 and high fuel costs.
The woman better known as Jay Kiaw had more than 200 passenger buses for inter-provincial services to the Northeast, the North, the Central Plain and the East. About 30% of the fleet is deployed for the services and the rest has been parked for over two years due to COVID-19 impacts.
Mrs Suchinda said the bus services became loss-ridden because there were not enough passengers and fuel costs were rising. Almost 100% of long-distance buses were out of business and the company maintained only its services on short routes from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima and eastern provinces. She said fuel cost the company at least 4 million baht a month.
Low-cost airlines formed another cause of her loss-ridden operation. People turned to budget airlines because they were faster and their fares were not much different from bus fares, she said. (TNA)
