Thailand’s banknotes not only reflect its history and values, but they also highlight the nation’s principal monuments. In the reign of King Rama X, the banknotes in circulation at present all feature monumental attractions tourists can visit.
THB20 – The Grand Palace, Bangkok
The back of this banknote displays a portrait of King Rama I, who founded the Rattanakosin Kingdom, with Bangkok as the capital, more than two centuries ago. Built during that time were the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
THB50 – Chatchawan Wiang Chai Tower, Phra Nakhon Khiri, Phetchaburi
The 50-baht note features a portrait of King Rama IV, who built the Chetchawan Wiang Chai Tower, which served as an astronomical observatory for the King, as the subject, along with science, was among the monarch’s passions.
THB500 – Sampheng Area, Bangkok
This banknote presents a portrait of King Rama VIII, who made a royal visit to the Chinese settlements in the Sampheng area of Bangkok. This historical visit laid the groundwork for the harmonious coexistence of multi-cultural communities in Thailand.
THB1,000 – Bang Nara River Development, Narathiwat
On this banknote, there is a portrait of King Rama IX perusing a map while visiting the local residents living near the Bang Nara River Basin Development Project. (PRD)
