Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has warned people they can be fined or jailed for carrying cannabis to other countries because its decriminalization takes effect only in Thailand. Government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana passed on the prime minister’s warning and said that cannabis was legalized in the country for medical and economic purposes.
The warning targeted the people who used products or medicine with cannabis content or had any parts of cannabis and planned to visit other countries.
They should carefully check related laws in the countries of their destination. Otherwise, they should not carry any product with cannabis content or parts of cannabis at all because many countries like Japan, Vietnam and Indonesia still imposed harsh punishments against cannabis possession including fine, imprisonment and death penalty, Mr Thanakorn said.
Meanwhile, South Korea imposed a jail term ranging from five years to life on cannabis smugglers. In South Korea cannabis cultivation or sales were liable to at least one year in prison. Cannabis possession or abuse carried a jail term of up to five years, expulsion and prohibition of a repeated visit to South Korea, Mr Thanakorn said. (TNA)
