BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit has ordered urgent inspections of railway infrastructure across Thailand following the collapse of the State Audit Office building under construction in Bangkok.
Accompanied by SRT Governor Veeris Ammarapala, Suriya visited the collapse site, where a construction crane had also fallen onto the roof of an SRT-operated rail switch repair facility. The facility has been temporarily closed for seven days to allow for a forensic investigation. The transport minister extended his condolences to those affected and directed all relevant agencies to provide full assistance.
In response to the quake’s possible impact on railway operations, the Ministry of Transport has instructed the SRT to carry out comprehensive safety checks on all infrastructure, including stations, elevated tracks, and key systems, particularly along the Red Line suburban rail network. While services are expected to resume today (Mar 29), all Northern, Northeastern, and Southern trains will temporarily depart from Bang Sue Grand Station. This rerouting may cause some delays, but is necessary to ensure passenger safety.
The SRT has reaffirmed that safety remains the top priority. Passengers are encouraged to stay updated and seek official information as needed. For assistance or inquiries, the SRT Customer Service Center can be reached 24 hours a day at hotline 1690. (NNT)
