BANGKOK, 10 August 2014 – The Ministry of Transport plans to request the National Council for Peace and Order to set up the department of rail transit system while reform in the State Railway of Thailand is taking place.
Permanent Secretary for Transport Soithip Traisut said the department of rail transit system should be established to develop policies and regulations for electric as well as double track trains in terms of service standards such as pricing and safety standards. Ms Soithip expressed her confidence that the rail transit system would be established during the NCPO’s term in the same time as train reform.
The permanent secretary added that the Ministry of Transport had signed an agreement with Vietnam to form the Mekong river railway authority in collaboration with Cambodia, Laos, China and Myanmar. The main objective of the new organization is to connect rail transit systems for transport of goods and passengers. Cambodia will be the first chair of the authority.
