BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Suriya Jungrungreangkit, held discussions with General Tan Sri Datuk Seri Azumi Mohamed, Chairman of Malaysia’s Dhaya Maju Infrastructure (Asia) Sdn Bhd (DMIA), about the possibility of collaborating on the Chumphon–Padang Besar double track railway project. The project aims to connect Thailand and Malaysia, facilitating seamless transportation and supporting long-term economic growth.

Suriya highlighted DMIA’s strong track record in rail infrastructure development, including large-scale projects both within Malaysia and internationally. The company has expertise in electrified double-track rail systems and is keen to invest in Thailand’s infrastructure through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). The Chumphon–Padang Besar route is a key part of Thailand’s broader double-track railway initiative, which also includes the Chumphon–Surat Thani section (168 kilometers), the Surat Thani–Hat Yai–Songkhla section (321 kilometers), and the Hat Yai–Padang Besar section (44 kilometers).

The designs for the Chumphon–Surat Thani and Surat Thani–Hat Yai–Songkhla sections are complete, and the project is awaiting Cabinet approval for infrastructure and civil works. Meanwhile, feasibility studies are underway for the Hat Yai–Sungai Kolok section (216 kilometers). The Ministry of Transport welcomes DMIA’s interest and hopes the partnership will help foster further infrastructure development and collaboration between the two nations.

In addition to discussing the railway project, the two sides also exchanged experiences and knowledge in rail system development, aiming to support economic growth, improve cross-border rail systems sustainably, and enhance industrial cooperation between Thailand and Malaysia. (TNA)
