BANGKOK, Thailand – The tripartite wage committee is set to move forward with plans to raise the minimum wage to 400 baht, with a key meeting scheduled for tomorrow, September 20th.

According to Labour Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, the vote can proceed even in the absence of employers’ representatives, as long as a two-thirds majority is achieved by the remaining committee members.

The Labour Minister reaffirmed the decision, noting that the committee, which includes representatives from both the employee and government sectors, will continue as planned. He expressed confidence that the wage increase will take effect by October 1st, as originally outlined. While acknowledging employers’ concerns, Phiphat emphasized that the Ministry of Finance is preparing relief measures to support businesses impacted by the wage hike, with these measures expected to be announced alongside the new wage.

When asked about the possibility of legal actions from employers, Minister Phiphat remained confident. He stated that the policy is being implemented with good intentions and that he is prepared for any potential outcomes, including lawsuits in the Administrative Court. He stressed that the wage increase aims to balance the needs of both workers and businesses, while minimizing disruptions.

The wage hike is a key commitment of the Pheu Thai-led government, and Phiphat reiterated his determination to fulfill that promise. (NNT)
