Chiang Rai – A tropical storm swept across several Thai provinces on Thursday and Friday, destroying homes, roads and electrical systems in its path.
In Chiang Rai, the storm felled trees and power poles, causing a blackout in the Chiang Rai municipality and its vicinity. More than 10 fallen poles blocked Phaholyothin Road linking Wiang and Mae Korn sub-districts, triggering a long traffic jam. Officials have already begun clearing the area.
In Surin, harsh winds knocked down a 60-meter-high signal tower in the Surin Provincial Court which fell over a storage room in a nearby building. Fortunately, no one was injured.
In Nakhon Ratchasima, thunderstorms, strong gusts of wind and hail wrecked 81 houses, schools, agricultural zones and livestock farms.
The storm also brought down a large tree, along with power polls in the Khon Kaen municipality. Local Disaster Prevention and Mitigation officials have already been dispatched to remove the tree. About 10 utility poles have also fallen on several households in a village in the municipality. Authorities were able to recover the electricity in the area quickly.
In Nong Khai, continuous rains have damaged the main road linking the province’s Nong Kong and Udon Thani’s Ban Na Kha, ruining the restoration efforts undertaken on the route by the military, administrative officials and locals in Nong Khai.
