Bangkok – Tropical storm Vibha is expected to make landfall soon in northern Vietnam and although the storm itself won’t prevail directly over Thailand, it has brought heavy rains to some parts, especially in northeastern and northern regions.
Nan City Municipality has installed more water pumps at Satri Si Nan School to cope with rain which is expected to continue over the next two days. The authorities earlier excavated canals to ensure drainage capacity, and examined the condition of drainage gates in the municipality area for their operational preparedness.
Water allocation officials for hydroelectric dams in the upper Nan River Basin area have raised five water gates at Thong Noi dam, maximizing drainage capacity into Sirikit Dam and preventing the overflow of rivers into surrounding communities.
In Bueng Kan, rain has fallen continuously in all eight districts of the province, raising water levels in the Mekong river which is now measured at 3.5 meters at Ban Pan Lam village, Muang Bueng Kan district. The higher water level benefits operators of cargo ships and passenger ferries between Thailand and Laos, enabling accurate and safer navigation.
In Chanthaburi, strong winds have been reported following the passage of tropical storm Vibha. Some trees and billboards have been brought down, and have caused damage to houses, blocked some roads, and caused power outages in several areas. The wind has also caused many durian trees in local farms to topple.
In Trat, personnel from local authorities have cleaned up debris and fallen trees at Wat Khiri Wihan Temple in Muang Trat district. Among the fallen trees are some large ones up to 100 years old. The heavy weather also caused damage to buildings inside the temple compound. Some utility poles were also felled, requiring the electricity supply to be cut off temporarily for the safety of recovery operations. Many houses nearby and in other districts were damaged, and are now to be formally examined by related agencies.
