UBON RATCHATHANI, 27 Dec 2014, Ubon Ratchathani Province is planning to eradicate illegal dormitories in the province, after discovering that over 100 of them have been operating without proper licenses.

According to Deputy Ubon Ratchathani Governor, Thanu Boonlert, the province came up with the plan came after it had received numerous complaints about dormitories operating without proper licenses, allowing illegal activities to take place.

The complaints indicated that these dorms ignore the law stipulating that such establishments must clearly identify whether they are dormitories for men or women, raising concerns that these venues could lead to problems such as teenage pregnancy, drugs and gambling.

In order to solve the problems, all operators whose business offer accommodation to more than 5 students of 25 years and under who are working toward a bachelor’s degrees or certificate must register with the provincial Social Development and Human Security Office, effective on January 1st, 2015.

Violators are subjected to imprisonment of no more than 6 months, in compliance with the 1964 Dormitory Act, said the deputy governor.
