BANGKOK, 2 May 2014 – The United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) has announced postponement of the planned mass demonstration on Aksa Road from May 5 to May 10 as the former date coincides with Coronation Day.
In his speech to about 7,000 supporters in Suphan Buri province today, UDD Chairman Jatuporn Prompan declared that he had made a decision to adjourn the next mass rally earlier set to take place on May 5 on Aksa Road in the westernmost part of Bangkok. He reasoned that the UDD had been accused by the Democrat Party and the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) of being disloyal to the monarchy, given May 5 would be when the Thai people observed Coronation Day.
In order to avoid such an accusation, Mr Jatuporn stated that May 10 had been fixed as the new date for the mass gathering. He said the UDD did not want to argue about the matter but would rather stay focused on its goal of fighting against undemocratic movements.
The UDD Chairman added that the group would hold rallies in Min Buri district of Bangkok tomorrow and in Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan on Sunday. He affirmed all activities would be suspended on May 5 but would resume in Nonthaburi on May 6 and in Rayong on May 7.
