The UN General Assembly has passed a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza after the Security Council’s inaction. With 153 of the 193 member nations voting in favor, the resolution surpasses support levels usually seen for resolutions against Russia’s actions in Ukraine. The United States and Israel voted against it, while 23 nations abstained.
This development follows the US veto of a Security Council draft for a truce, highlighting US support for Israel. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has since raised concerns about the deteriorating situation in Gaza.
The resolution demands an immediate ceasefire, protection of civilians, and humanitarian access. It comes amid ongoing Israeli attacks in Gaza, following an initial Hamas attack on Israeli soil, leading to massive casualties.
Arab countries prompted the General Assembly session to increase pressure after a Security Council delegation visited the Rafah border. The resolution reflects the one the US blocked in the Security Council. Allies of Israel and the US, including Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, have also expressed concerns over civilian safety in Gaza. (NNT)
