BANGKOK, Thailand – Understanding the proper use of emergency exits and safety equipment on buses is crucial in the event of an accident. Buses are typically equipped with several emergency tools, including a glass-breaking hammer, a fire extinguisher, and an emergency exit door, all designed to help passengers evacuate safely. However, many passengers are unfamiliar with how to operate these tools correctly. Here’s a look at how each item should be used in an emergency.

Glass-Breaking Hammer:
The glass-breaking hammer is usually mounted near the side windows of the bus and has a red handle with a small metal head. This tool is specifically designed to break the glass, creating an escape route. To use it, remove the hammer from its holder, grip the handle firmly, and use the pointed end to score a line or groove along the glass. Once the line is made, strike the glass along this groove using the pointed end to shatter it completely. The hammer is engineered to concentrate the impact force, making it more effective than using a random object in an emergency.

Fire Extinguisher:
Fire extinguishers on buses are essential for containing small fires before they spread. To use one correctly, follow four basic steps: Pull, Release, Press, and Sweep. First, pull the locking pin from the lever. Next, release the hose and aim the nozzle at the base of the fire, as aiming directly at the flames will not be effective. Then, press the lever to discharge the contents. Finally, use a sweeping motion from side to side to cover the entire base of the fire. It is important to maintain a safe distance of around 6 to 8 feet from the fire while operating the extinguisher to avoid injury.

Emergency Exit Door:
Regulations require buses with a single front door to have an additional emergency exit door located on the right side, either in the middle or towards the rear of the vehicle. This door must be at least 40 x 120 centimeters in size and should open fully in case of an emergency. It is crucial that this door can be opened without the use of a key or any special tools and that no objects permanently obstruct this exit. Clear signs indicating the emergency exit’s location and instructions on how to operate it should be visible from both inside and outside the bus, ensuring passengers can quickly identify and use it in an emergency.

Understanding these emergency procedures and knowing how to use these tools correctly can make a critical difference in ensuring passenger safety during an unexpected incident. Being prepared and familiar with these safety measures is a simple yet essential step to mitigate risks and improve emergency response time. (NNT)
