BANGKOK, 11 May 2015  Representatives from the organization of village headmen have petitioned the National Reform Council to amend the draft charter’s provision calling for the restructuring of local administration as the changes would cost them their jobs.

The petitioned called for the scrapping of sections 82, 284 and 285 in the draft constitution which abolish local administrative bureaucrats.

The group claims that village headmen are most in tune with the needs of local people and their removal would compromise the state’s servicing of the public.

Furthermore, local administrative positions have historically provided suitable checks and balances to the central power and have enhanced government accountability.
