TRANG, May 29 – Nearly 100 homes and shops lining Pakmeng Beach in this southern province are facing coastal erosion and high tide, according to the local village head.

Winai Chusiangchaew, a village official in Sikao district, said waves two metres high have hit the coast, felling pine trees and flooding the Chaomai-Hadchanglang beach.

Traffic is quite congested on some portions of the road, as the road is becoming narrower. The problem worsens year by year, as 92 pine trees were carried away by the rough high water and 6-8 metres of beachfront have disappeared as a result of recent coastal erosion.

Local authorities are seeking 180,000 baht to buy 7,000 sandbags for building wave breaking embankments.
