Thai pride skyrocketed as a young weightlifter from Surin Province, Weeraphon “Wave” Wichuma, claimed a silver medal in the men’s 73 kilogram weightlifting category at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
At just 19 years old, Weeraphon was the youngest competitor in his class and lifted a total weight of 346 kilograms. His victory added to the already impressive achievement previously made by Thai weightlifting team members Theerapong Silachai, who secured silver in the men’s 61 kilogram category, and Surodchana Khambao, who took bronze in the women’s 49 kilogram event.
Previously, Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya graciously bestowed royal floral bouquets to honor four Thai athletes who won medals at the Olympic Games.
These athletes were Panipak Wongpattanakit, who won gold in the women’s 49 kilogram taekwondo, Theerapong Silachai, Surodchana Khambao, and Chanjam Suwanpeng, who earned bronze in women’s 66 kilogram boxing.
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin expressed his admiration for the Thai athletes’ achievements at the Paris Olympic Games. He praised Weeraphon’s silver medal win and encouraged all Thai athletes, whether they succeeded or faced challenges, to continue developing their skills for future competitions.
