BANGKOK, 6 November 2014 – The Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) has asked the National Legislative Assembly to include clear punishment terms in the animal welfare act.

WWFT founder Edwin Pieter on Thursday met with NLA President Pornpetch Wichitcholchai to submit a request for punishment clauses under Thailand’s first animal welfare bill.

The NLA, in early October, passed the first reading of the draft law that has been written to criminalise people who harm their pets.

Mr. Pieter urged Mr. Pornpetch to empower and extend the effectiveness of the draft bill by making clear what punishment will await those who break the law in any way, such as sexual assault against dogs or catching dogs to be sold to slaughterhouses.

The WWFT founder insisted that the NLA study all aspects needed for this law because, he said, cats and dogs are not food.
