WFMC proposes tree-planting project to prevent floods

BANGKOK, 5 April 2013 The Water and Flood Management Commission (WFMC) is proposing a budget of 11 billion baht for the tree-planting project which is aimed at preventing future floods. 

Deputy Prime Minister and WFMC chairman Plodprasop Suraswadi said he is planning to submit the flood control master plan to the cabinet for consideration next week. The project involves planting trees covering 1 million rai over five years which is set to reduce flood risks by slowing down the transfer of floodwater into rivers.

The initiative, if approved, will commence next year, with initial plans to plant trees in 200,000 rai of land in low-lying provinces.

Mr Plodprasop elaborated that Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra had urged Bangkok residents to partake in the project by planting trees in government-designated green areas near Bangkok. The green areas which is part of the tree-planting project will be looked after by nearby schools.
