BANGKOK, 23 April 2013 The World Health Organization (WHO) says dengue fever is the world’s fastest- spreading tropical disease, with around 300 million people infected each year.

According to Director-General of the Disease Control Department Phornthep Siriwanarangsan, the WHO sees dengue fever as the quickest tropical disease that can cause a viral outbreak, with as many as 300 million suffering from it each year; 3 times as high as the number anticipated by the organization.

As a result, the department is launching a campaign in each district across Thailand to raise awareness on dengue fever. He said the disease has been a big issue in the country.

Meanwhile, the Bureau of Epidemiology has forecast that this year’s dengue situation will likely worsen, given over 11,000 cases of the viral disease, with 14 deaths, were reported in the first quarter of 2013.
