YALA, 18 April 2014 – The mayor of Yala City on Thursday called for officials to quickly fill the coverage gap in monitoring by CCTV cameras in the city, given it has been 2 years since the budget for the extra cameras was approved.

Phongsak Yingchoncharoen, mayor of Nakhon Yala municipality, on Thursday suggested that agencies consider hiring companies that were well-experienced in CCTV camera installation and avoid awarding contracts to companies that were only recently set up to enjoy the boon from the drive to install extra cameras in the Deep South. He argued that maintenance of the cameras was important and well-seasoned companies would do better in that regard.

According to Mr. Phonsak, there are 34 points of entry into downtown Yala via road, and not all areas in the city are provided with CCTV camera coverage.

The mayor noted that complete coverage in the downtown area have yet to be achieved although the 90 million baht budget for the purpose was allocated 2 years ago.

The April 6 car bomb explosion and the 3 other blasts that subsequently rocked downtown Yala resulted in 1 death and 28 injuries.
