YASOTHON, 18 June 2015 – A large number of donors in Yasothon province participated in the blood drive held to commemorate World Blood Donor Day.
Yasothon Governor Prawat Thitakaew presided over the opening ceremony of the event, which saw participation from many donors.
The governor explained that June 14 commemorates the birth of Dr. Karl Landsteiner, creator of the ABO blood group system. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the World Health Organization (WHO) has marked June 14 of as the annual “World Blood Donor Day”.
This year, China was assigned to host a remembrance of Dr. Karl Landsteiner. Meanwhile, Thailand has organized the commemorative blood drive for 12 years. This year, the slogan was “Give freely, give often. Blood donation matters.” Thailand has encouraged blood donations every three months, claiming blood donations are good for one’s health.
This year’s blood drive saw almost 500 donors participating.
