New Delhi – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) New Delhi Office signed up as the Tourism Partner in one of India’s most prestigious Polo tournaments as part of the marketing strategy to raise awareness levels among upmarket, high-spending Indian travellers.

Held on 9 March 2013 at Jaipur Polo Ground, New Delhi, the Seven Island RMRM Gold Vase and Seven Island Pataudi Polo Cup was attended by one of India’s best-known Bollywood figures, veteran actress Sharmila Tagore, along with her daughters Soha and Saba Ali Khan. The Chief Guest was H.E Ambassador of Thailand to India, Mr. Pisan Manawapat.

The Pataudi Cup is named after the late Nawab of Pataudi, Mansur Ali Khan, the late husband of Ms Tagore, and himself a former captain of the Indian national Test cricket team. The event was attended by diplomats, senior government officials, businessmen, industrialists and socialites of India.

Against a full backdrop of Thailand tourism marketing imagery and promotional material, the exhibition match was played between Seven Islands team and Army Polo Riding Club (APRC).

A second match for the Seven Islands RMRM Gold Vase was won by Team Jindal captained by MP Naveen Jindal against Action Team. Seven Islands RMRM Gold Vase, a 106-year old tournament, closed the Delhi Polo Spring Season 2013.  The afternoon ended with lucky draws of business class tickets by Thai Airways International followed by high tea.

Director, TAT New Delhi, Ms. Runjuan Tongrut said, “TAT was delighted to be a part of the exciting and royal event, and expand our reach amongst a very important segment of Indian society. The two polo matches were action packed, giving all the guests an enjoyable afternoon. TAT had a very successful association with Seven Islands for the event.”

Seven Islands was the title sponsor of the match while Tourism Authority of Thailand was the Tourism Partner and Thai Airways was an Airline Partner. Thai Airways took the opportunity to promote its new low-cost subsidiary airline, Thai Smiles, which launched twice-weekly direct flights from New Delhi to Phuket as of April 2, 2013.

Other sponsors of the Polo match included Rolls Royce.

TAT is promoting Thailand as a luxury and niche destination to Indian consumers, and participation in this event went a long way towards strengthening the Amazing Thailand brand presence in India, Ms. Runjuan said.

In 2012, India became the sixth country to generate more than one million annual visitor arrivals for Thailand, with total arrivals of 1,015,865, up 11.03% over 2011. In 2013, the TAT is targeting 1.11 million arrivals from India.
