Pattaya-Rayong-U-Tapao International Airport and related projects monitored for progress

At Santi Maitri Building, Government House, Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha chaired the 2/2020 meeting of the Eastern Economic Corridor Policy Committee to follow up on the progress of U-Tapao Airport and Eastern Aviation City development.



The meeting acknowledged the “Eastern Aviation City” development project within the area of 6,500 rai in U-Tapao Airport, with the approximate investment budget of 290 billion Baht. Key components of the Eastern Aviation City are: 1) Passenger Terminal Building 3, 2) Commercial Gateway and Ground Transportation Centre, 3) Maintenance Repair and Overhaul, 4) Cargo Village or Free Trade Zone, 5) Cargo Complex, and 6) Aviation Training Centre. It is expected that the project create additional 15,600 jobs per year within the next 5 years, and engender new technologies, as well as labor skill development in aviation business and other related businesses. All the assets will be returned to the Government after the contract ends.

The “Eastern Aviation City” will act as “the 3rd Bangkok Airport” connecting Don Muang and Suvarnabhumi Airports with the high-speed train. It will also be EEC’s tourism and logistics & aviation hub, and hub for the extended ‘Eastern Aviation Metropolis’ linking Bangkok and vicinity via land, rail (high-speed train), and air (airport).



Office of the Eastern Economic Corridor Policy Committee Secretary-General Khanit Saengsuphan disclosed that the Prime Minister emphasized at the meeting that U-Tapao Airport and Eastern Aviation City development project and “the High-Speed Rail Linking Three Airports Project” must be undertaken in parallel for best benefits of the projects and national development as a whole. – May 21, 2020.
