Dear Sir,
In a previous volume of the Pattaya Mail, a front page story referred to the inaugural flight of the LTU aircraft arriving at U-Tapao airport 20 minutes ahead of schedule and thus demonstrating typical German punctuality.I would like to inform you, however, that the punctuality award for foreign airliners for the Amsterdam Schiphol airport (one of the major European airports) is currently held by Thai Airways.
Whenever I come to Thailand, I always try to fly Thai, because of this punctuality and great service.
Regards,
J. Lievense

Sir:
Your front page article in the December 12 issue of Pattaya Mail regarding the deplorable transportation service in the city was most laudable. Unfortunately, like other crusades you have undertaken in the past, it will almost certainly fall on deaf ears. The response of the management of these parasites to the plight of the unfortunate farang who was beaten by one of their operators would be laughable if it werent so tragic, but as long as "vested interests" run the city of Pattaya rather than the government, Royal Decree or no Royal Decree, the status quo will inevitably remain. Its no wonder that Thailand is facing such a monumental financial disaster while such thinking remains ingrained in Thai culture.
I suspect that if you presented the premise to the city fathers that politicians were elected "By the people, of the people, and for the people," rather than for the "unusually rich," their response would be, "What mean"?

Editor:
The Map-Ta-Phut Highway Police have been very visible these past few weeks, cracking down on over loaded trucks and speeders on one of the worst stretches of highway the country. This seems to be ongoing and not just a temporary show of authority. If this can be expanded to include the multitude of vehicles in non-compliance with emission controls, then they should really be applauded.Latest scam in Pattaya; One street vendor sells you a watch and when you go to check price with another vendor, he accuses you of stealing the watch from him. He then calls the Police on his cell phone (yes, cell phone; dont all street vendors have one?) and two men show up in tan shirts and brown pants, identify themselves as police, then extort what they can. One tourist had to pay US$300 to these people on the street. I dont think he will be coming back to Pattaya. Please try and let everyone know, any problems, call Tourist Police!

Not pleased with clean efforts
Dear Sir,
Congratulations, Pattaya, for our Clean City. I am sure that Calcutta, Mexico City and Bangkok must have gotten awards for their clean air at the same time. Truly, Pattaya is a garbage pit waiting to be cleaned up. Our beaches arent fit to swim in and flowers are seen to cover the filth.Every day I drive home to Suksabai Villa looking at the 300 metres of broken toilets, trash and garbage that adorns the road. There is nothing that the city will do (cant it be policed and a healthy fine given to people who dump and burn their trash there?)
Continue on Soi 17 to Thepprasit and see more.
Save your jokes for the Grapevine, not the front page.
A Suksabai Villa Resident

Dear Editor;
I was delighted to read the latest edition of your auspicious newspaper to find an introduction of myself as having just been appointed GM of Mercure Hotel Pattaya Resort.
Having now been in this position for nearly 2 years and about to be transferred to Surabaya, Indonesia in the next few weeks your article highlighted the usual efficiencies I have come to expect in this town.
Whilst the article was most welcoming and very generous I would have thought our association over this period of time would have negated the need to produce this article.
Possibly in my new position in Indonesia I will access your homepage in the Internet and discover sometime in the next year or two who my replacement will be.
Thanking you for the support over the past 2 years and wishing you and your newspaper the very best of luck and prosperity for 1998.
Best regards,
John Garner
